Advent Boxes

It's finally done and only one day late. The last few years we haven't really had an Advent Calendar so I have been looking for a creative one to make, that didn't require tooooo much effort. This is what I came up with (copy catted of course!) Each day there will be a treat (well, 3 treats) or a prize or activity to do that day in the box. If we want we can turn the lid upside down after they empty that days box, so we'll know where we're at on the countdown :). I'm still working on the 25 - I tried to do something clever and it just turned out silly. Lyndsee will be happy when she gets home. She's been very disturbed that it's not ready yet.

Here's a view of it down the hall with the Christmas tree in the background.

Thanks to Nicole for her fabulous Cricut machine and awesome selection of fonts!

I'm off to ice skating - I'll be painting the Christmas show sets today while the girls skate.

Lyndsee and York on the Diet Coke Chair

This picture says several things:

  1. Lyndsee LOVES York - am I going to have to get her a puppy for her 13th birthday? Luckily I have 6 years to think that over.
  2. Brianna wasn't home - if she were Lyndsee wouldn't be holding York - she gets a little jealous.
  3. Diet Coke is on sale for $1.88 a 12 pack. I'm going back to the store on Friday so we can turn the chair into a sofa.
I'm heading to bed - the Turkey Trot 10k is in the morning. I'm excited and nervous but thrilled at the potential of burning 1,000 calories before Thanksgiving dinner.

Does anybody ever read this? If so please put a comment on today. I'm beginning to feel under appreciated. :)

Football Star

Yes, it's true. Lyndsee is playing football. She loves it. She does pretty good and when she's "in the zone" she does great! Lyndsee loves playing football with her buddies Tyler, Skyler, Kyler and Kevin. Yesterday she had a great run making it halfway down the field with the ball. She caught one pass for a two point conversion a few games ago too. She thinks of herself as a tomboy but don't think she doesn't have a girly side too. She goes from football games to figure skating classes and is looking forward to the figure skating show so she can wear her sparkly skirt and leotard. She sure keeps us hoppin'!

Best Birthday Present Ever

Brianna's 13th birthday is about 3 weeks away. For the past month I've been trying to find her the ultimate birthday present, and Friday we did it! We found York.

York is adorable. He is a Malshipoo (half Maltese, quarter each shih tzu and poodle) aka an overpriced MUTT. :) Brianna has been wanting a dog of her own for quite a while and we decided that now was the time to do it. He'll get to be about 10 pounds so not as tiny as I think she wanted but we didn't want him to be too delicate to play and go for walks and so on. I think he's going to be great. Brianna has been amazing with him. She's learned to clean carpeting really well :) and is getting up with him in the night, just like a new mom. Hopefully potty training will go quickly, he seems like a smart dog - especially since we are about to get new carpeting in the family room!

Brianna is a good girl, a fabulous student, a good friend, a great daughter, a (mostly) sweet sister and an amazing person! She deserves this furry little friend. You're only a kid once. :)

One Marathon Down, How Many To Go???

It was a great race. I was pretty far off my finishing goal, but I didn't care at all. I had a great time with friends, I felt like I ran strong and steady, and I never hit "the wall", and the best part was finishing with Lisa to the sound of our families cheering us on.

I was VERY nervous the night before. I was fine through dinner, I enjoyed meeting Marcie and Hannah and their families (Lindy's friends from Utah who were running the race too). I got several texts and messages from friends and family wishing me luck, I was touched that they were thinking of me. After the dinner clean up we all called it a night before 10pm. I think I laid in bed till nearly 2:00am before finally dozing off with the alarm waking me just two hours later.

At the start Lisa and I enjoyed a cup of hot cocoa, I thought that was a perfect pre-race treat. We tossed our bags in the truck as the race started and then we headed back to the fires for a final warming before starting the race about six minutes after the clock started. I felt good for the first little while but I was worried about going too quick at the beginning. I know my body likes to hold steady, where Lisa likes to change her pace a lot more. So we would get separated as she flew down the hills, then I would catch her on the flats. We were mostly together for the first 13 miles.

Around mile 9 I knew I needed to stop at a porto-potty. I kept seeing them and they would have long lines so I would go to the next one. At mile 13 I finally stopped and sent Lisa on her way. I stood in line and stretched while 7 MINUTES ticked away on my watch. I was frustrated, but once I stopped I knew it would be stupid to start back up as there would probably be another line at the next one so I just enjoyed visiting with the others in line. Once I started again I was running strong and decided I didn't care that I was clearly not going to make my time. My new goal was just to catch Lisa.

It was a HUGE BOOST to see my family at mile 16. Brianna and Madelyn were at the front of the crowd and saw me and ran back to tell the others I was on my way. They were all cheering for me when I got up to them and Lyndsee had her signs she had made for me. I took a swig of the cold chocolate milk they had for me, found out that Lisa was probably still 5 -7 minutes in front of me and ran on. It was awesome to see them and I felt really strong for the next few miles.

I was hoping that I was catching up with Lisa, I was running under our goal pace and all was going well till around mile 18. I started having foot cramps, not too bad at first but getting more frequent. It felt like my toes just wanted to curl into my heel so when I put it flat on the ground it hurt. I stopped and stretched a bit and walked through every aid station. I was getting more and more worried that I might not catch Lisa.

Finally during mile 22 I thought I saw her way ahead. Again I had a mental boost and I was able to really kick it (which at that point was a 10:30 mile) I caught her just past the mile 23 marker where she was stretching her calves. I was so glad she had dawdled and waited for me!

We ran together the last three miles, my foot pain was back and becoming more frequent. During the last mile it would cramp up what felt like about every 10 steps, I would moan a little and sort of limp it off but I was going to stay with Lisa! Just before the finish line we saw our families again and then we crossed the finish line hand in hand. As we looked at each other we were both tearing up, and it wasn't from the pain!

What a fabulous experience. It was such a good feeling to have this huge goal out there, to have a plan to work towards it, and to finally accomplish the goal. I was proud of my finish time, even though it was not what I originally wanted. I learned a lot and think I will definitely do this again!

Thanks to all of you who trained with me, supported me and cheered me on to the bitter end.

Saturday Chores

I just found this video that Logan took on a Saturday morning several weeks back. I didn't realize he was taking it. I thought it was a pretty funny glimpse into our routine. No one else may find it funny - but I was really laughing while I watched it. Here's why:

1. Lyndsee is supposed to be doing chores, but she's laying on the couch.

2. Logan is supposed to be doing chores but he is secretly videotaping our family.

3. Brianna is supposed to be doing chores but she is in her room reading (I can't confirm this but I'd be willing to bet on it as this is what happens every Saturday.)

4. There was a cupcake that was apparantly Lyndsee's, but everyone else wanted it.

5. Lyndsee wanted Brianna to have to finish all her chores before she could have it - my quote there is "that will be a long time." I'm pretty sure the cupcake would still be rotting on my counter if we were waiting for that.

I don't expect that much of them on Saturdays. They are supposed to clean their rooms and bathrooms and then do one or two other chores that I choose (like dusting, taking out trash/recycles, a load of laundry, etc.) If they just did the work it would take less than an hour - but usually it takes 3 or 4 hours and sometimes that's just to get their room done! Funny.

Happy Noises

I guess my kids have gotten used to waking up early since school is back in. This morning Lyndsee came in my room WAAAAYYY too early for a Sunday. She wanted to watch tv but I told her to go play with some toys. Lately I've been threatening to get rid of some more of the kids toys since they rarely play with them. A few minutes later I heard her dragging a bucket of toys out to the family room and I dozed back off. When I woke up an hour later I heard noises in the family room I haven't heard in what feels like years. Logan and Lyndsee were happily playing with Legos. Lyndsee had brought out Logan's old chunkier set of Legos and had built a tower and a truck completed with a wrecking ball. Time and time again the tower went up and the wrecking ball crashed it down. The game modified several times and it was great to hear their imaginations at work. I hated to break up the game to get ready for church. It was one of those moments that I wished I could freeze in time and keep them little forever. I guess I'll keep the Lego's...for now.

Cake Time

I hadn't had a birthday cake yet, so Scott made one on Sunday. I can't wait to have lunch so I can have 'lunch dessert.' It was an awesome three layer dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache frosting. I love having a husband that can cook! What a great birthday.

Up at Dawn

Three kids. Three loaded down backpacks. All up at dawn. It's Back to School Time.

Contacts, wavy hair, buying lunch, 10 pound pack, three honors classes, drama, almost missed the bus, mom more nervous than daughter about the first day of Jr. High. She's amazing!

Put a shirt on, summer's over!

Played 'speed' all morning, says he doesn't want to go back to school, 5th grade, lots of friends in his class, ALP Math this year, wearing adult size shoes, forgot lunch, rode the bus.

1st Grade. Anxiety, excitement, crooked hair ("just fix it Mom"), crocodile tears (look at her eyes - poor girl.) Nice to her siblings all morning, wanted a ride to class, wouldn't let go of mom's or Jacob's (friend) hand, forgot lunch, forgot homework. Mom feels like a failure... Mom hopes she did the right thing by moving her into a different class. A few more hours and we'll know!

A quiet house. Errands done, bills paid, dishes loaded, laundry folded... Yeah, I'm missing them already. :)

5th Annual Christopher Creek Trip

I think it was our best trip yet. Here are the higlights: Lots of fish, a hike in Box Canyon, crawdads, sticks, caterpillars, card games, a girls tent, a "no fire sticks" rule, a Saturday run, good food, a forgotten tent, sleeping under the stars, waking up with a spider in my hair, kids in the same clothes ALL weekend, perfect weather, a camp shower, Jumanji - aka a giant trout (we'll get him next year), a bubble blowing contest, double bubbles, a forgotten camera (PLEASE send me pictures), rock climbing, kids getting up before the crack of dawn, finishing my run and breakfast was ready, and above all GREAT FRIENDS! Thanks for the memories.

Academic Night

Scott and I are so proud of Logan and Brianna. They both made Academic Night this year, which means they have to have all A's on their report cards with not more than one B all year. They are both naturally good students, but they did have their challenges this year. For Brianna it was math. She catches on, but it takes her a little while longer in this subject. AND, there were a few times that her teacher had something marked wrong or showed an assigment as missing that wasn't. You would think it would be easy for her to get that fixed, but it isn't. I know I need to let go a little so I held back this year and made her deal with these things herself and she did it! For Logan reading and writing are challenges. Not because he can't do them, but because he doesn't like to or want to. He improved a lot this year, and although I don't think he's ready to admit it, I think he's beginning to like to read. I am impressed that his teacher was able to read his handwriting well enough to even give him a grade. Good thing he's not graded on penmanship! :)

These pictures are of my kids and their friends who also made Academic Night at Oregano's after the ceremony. They were NUTS!

Sunday

I was a bad mom and didn't take one photo on Easter. So on the way home from church yesterday I demanded all the children to go to the back yard for pictures. I threatened them with hours of quiet time in their rooms if they didn't cooperate. So here are the results. Lyndsee was hamming it up (in the gorgeous dress made by Grandma Baxter) and Logan was putting on his best Zack Efron look. Funny. I love these kids!

Up is BAD, Down is GOOD!

These pictures were taken from the Patio of our hotel room! It was a beautiful dessert setting.

I put this blog on my running blog, but thought I would copy it here for you non-runners too who might be interested. I finished with a time of 2:11:58. Yes, it is a new PR (by over 5 minutes) and I'm totally happy about that. I was looking for a bit better of a time, but for me it was a rough race! Since I've been running really consistently now for about a year and a half I thought my time would shoot up a bit more, so I was shooting for 2:10 which is just under a 10 minute mile. I'm trying not to dwell on the fact that I didn't hit my personal goal since I did set a personal record. Yeah!

Here are the gory details for those who are interested (it's LONG.)

We drove to Tucson on Saturday afternoon. Getting to the packet pickup (no expo) at around 3:30. We got our race bibs, chips and shirts which are really nice. The shirts are a white technical tee from Mizuno. They weren't really friendly or helpful at the packet pickup. We wanted a map to the start of the course or at least directions. They handed us a lousy course map and kind of pointed in the direction of the start a few miles away. I asked what time they suggested being there, wondering what parking would be like and the volunteer said, "well the race starts at 7:00 so you better be there before that." DUH? Lindy had read me an excerpt from Runners World on Saturday about what a great race this was, but I was starting to wonder. More on that later.

Scott and I used his iphone to find the course and drove the entire course. I had an elevation map with me that I had printed out on their website. It was SOOOOO off! I think they must have just taken an altitude measurement at each mile marker and plotted it on the map, but I'm not sure if it was even that accurate. A lot of hills can come and go over the course of a mile. As we drove I started getting a knot in my stomach. By the end I was downright sick! I train on completely flat terrain and the two hill runs I did had totally kicked my butt. Scott was trying to talk it up, how he was excited and that it would be an adventure. I know he was only saying that to try and calm me down because I was seriously wondering what I had gotten ourselves in to. He drove me over to a movie theater and the movie did take my mind off my troubles for a little while. We checked into our hotel and had a nice pasta dinner. We set our alarm clock for 5:30 and I actually slept pretty well. Because of a comment a friend made to me on Friday I did have a dream that I wore heelies on the race and popped in my wheels on the downs - wheeeeee!

Race Morning - I put on my new sports bra (see comment on the running blog under Race Day Gear about this) my new race tee shirt, my old trusty shorts and add my vest and sweatshirt. I should have worn my lucky socks, but they were dirty. I'm still wondering if I'll run in my vest as it's cold out this morning. We drive to the course, parking is well marked and plentiful. The parking area is right next to the start line. As we walk to the course I see a line a mile long for the porta potties which is bad, because I definitely want to go to the bathroom one more time. I find another porta pottie with a shorter line but the wait is still about 10 minutes. Some people in line are commenting that there seems to be less toilets and more people than last year. You would think someone would have done the math, hmmm.... Scott goes to find the gear check and comes back to let me know there is a gear check, but no bags. So after the porta potty we wrap our jackets and my vest and car key up in a sweatshirt and attach our gear check tag. When we ask why there aren't bags they tell us they are trying to be green. Scott and I think that's fine, but it would have been nice to know that we needed to bring a bag. Maybe they could have at least had some used grocery bags.

We're off to the starting line and get there just in time! We kiss goodbye and Scott leaves me in the dust. The crowd thins out quickly and we're heading uphill, but not for long. We have a half mile down hill before our first long hill. I get a great time on my first mile and even with the hill on mile two I'm happy with my pace. The next several miles are more of the same, up, down, up, down. Even with my slow uphills I'm still really happy with my time at the halfway point, even beating my best 10k time and feeling good. It's an out and back course so I know what I'm in for for the rest of the race. I see Scott at the turn around, he looks good and I feel good. Half way done!

I leapfrogged the whole race with three noteworthy groups/individuals. The first is an old man in a yellow shirt. I called him Old Man Yellow Shirt (say this with an American Indian accent.) He was doing awesome. I passed him once around mile 8 but he passed me again on the next uphill and I never caught up to him again, even though I saw him walk a few times. I found out later that he is 75 years old! He won in his age group (of two people.) I was a little humbled that I couldn't get past him, as I knew I was almost half his age. The second group of note were two girls in cute matching purple tanks, I called them the matchy matchy girls. I enjoyed watching them for a few reasons. The first is that they reminded me of what Lindy and I look like running together. If Lindy and I got matching tank tops we would have looked like them. One girl was tiny and trotting along like it was a walk in the park. The other girl was taller and like me was,"a heavy runner" but she looked fit (I hope I look like that too.) She was clearly the weaker link in the duo but doing great. Anyways, they were having fun, chatting occasionally and they had a great support crew following them and taking lots of pictures. They were just ahead or behind me for the first 5 miles. The other reason I liked them is because I passed them around mile 5 and didn't see them again (that's the competitive spirit in me.) The last group of note were the run/walk girls. They would run for a few minutes and then walk for a few minutes. For miles about 5 - 9.5 we leapfrogged. I would pass them on their walks and they would pass me on their runs. They were making good time and I was jealous of their walks. They were chatting and having fun and obviously keeping a good pace. I did pass them on one of their walks on a hill and never saw them again, so I guess they must have faded. I wouldn't mind looking into the run/walk strategy for a marathon but that's a different story.

A note about music. I had spent some time arranging a playlist for the race. I chose some favorite tried and true, fun songs, and then on a tip from Amy and Brian I looked into some techno beat mixes you can download for free. They are basically synthesizer music, no words, and they are set to a bpm that is supposed to correlate with your desired pace. I ended up listening to that almost the whole time. I started off with a few favorites songs and then this started and went for an hour. It was so great. I found that it was just a beat to move to but no words to distract me and I had a lot to think about as you can see from this LOOOOONG post. After it ended I skipped through a few more songs but none of them were working for me so I went back to this. I think I listened to it for all but three songs. So thanks to Amy and Brian for that!

At the half way point I was thinking I might really beat my goal, but that realization faded around mile 9 and I realized around mile 11 that I probably wasn't even going to meet my goal. That was frustrating.

Miles 9.5 to 10.88 are uphill and that's what killed me. I hit a wall around mile 10. In my head I was expecting to go down hill or at least flat at mile 10. That's what the elevation map showed and that had seemed about right when we drove it, but we didn't set our odometer. Around mile 10.25 I was really fading. I looked at my watch and my pace was slower than 12 minutes. I'm sure I slowed even more but I was really trying to push through it. Pretty soon my arms, legs and neck started to get cold and tingly. I was thinking how strange that was when the feeling spread to my cheeks and the top of my head and I realized I was totally light headed. I stopped and walked for a few seconds and it went away. I forced myself to walk to the next light pole and then started my slow climb again. Pretty soon that down I was expecting finally showed up! I cruised down mile 11 - my second fasted mile during the race. I was hoping to make up some time I lost on that uphill. My strategy was working until the last uphill (again, this wasn't on the map.) I couldn't believe that I had to stop and walk AGAIN with only about a third of a mile to go. A guy ran by and said, "only a quarter mile to go." I know he was trying to be encouraging but I'm thinking - "Do you think I don't know that? Do you think I WANT to be walking?" I worked through the dizziness and my first side stitch of the race - STUPID- I guess that fast last mile might have been too fast? I finished strong, but almost 2 minutes over my goal!

The finish line was great. They called out your name as you crossed handed you your medal and shuttled you into an area with drinks, bagels, fruit etc. After some passing nausea I felt pretty good but a little sick to my stomach. I met up with Scott and he told me his time, which was under his goal. We exchanged a few race tidbits as we snacked and I recovered. I was really frustrated with myself for a few minutes, and jealous that Scott had beat his goal, but I quickly got more positive, especially since I really think I gave it my all. There were a few vendor booths but we pretty much just collected our stuff and headed for our hotel and the shower!

The ball of my left foot had bothered me a little the second half of the race, but I was really surprised to take off my shoe and see a monster blister. I had a smaller one on my right foot too. I'm not sure what caused this because I haven't really had blister problems before. Maybe the hills, or the fact that the road sloped a lot, especially on the second half of the race. Also, my left hip has been a little sore for a few days, so maybe my stride was off. I don't think this slowed me much, if at all, and it's kind of like a badge of honor, right?

I had heard this race billed as a John Bingham (frequent contributer to Runner's World) racing event but the ONLY sign of that I saw was the mile markers had a penguin and John Bingham racing printed on them. I don't think there was any other involvement from him. So I think another group must have taken over in recent years. The race itself was fine, but I think they've got some room for improvement.

Overall it was a great race. I plan to make a half marathon an annual tradition for at least the next few years. I guess I left some room for improvement. I'll be looking for a flatter course next year, or at least preparing more if I repeat this race.

Thanks to all of you for your support! It was fun to have your supportive posts, texts and phone calls in the days leading up the race and of course right after. It's so sweet that you care!

So ladies, how far are we running Tuesday?

Spring Training

Scott and Logan went to a Spring Training game on Saturday. Logan chose to go and watch the Giants play the A's. He was pretty excited and was looking through his closet for something to wear to support his team that day. I offered up for him to wear Uncle David's Giants hat and he was pretty excited. I was very emotional seeing him in it. Logan was very sweet and gave me lots of hugs. :)

Logan is at the age now that I really remember David and knew him the best. David came out to visit us a few times here in AZ and also in UT when he was around 10 to 12 years old and we always had a great time with him. It was neat for Logan to be able to connect with his uncle that day.

It's Out

Good News! Lyndsee got her tooth out. Now she's officially missing her "two front teeth."

Tooth Trouble

Lyndsee decided to let her daddy try pulling her super wiggly tooth with pliers tonight.

She was so brave and decided to let Scott pull the pliers instead of doing it herself. He gave it a good tug - and it stuck! I guess it wasn't as loose as we all thought.

After a hug and some comforting from daddy she's wiggling it again. Maybe tomorrow...

Donuts!

We tried making donuts tonight. The recipe said they would taste like Krispy Kreme's, but they didn't.

The donuts tasted ok, but they were a lot of fun to make.

Brianna had the right idea by eating them with a big glass of milk.

I remember my mom making zucchinni donuts when I was a kid and they were YUMMY! I'll have to track down that recipe and try those next time.

I love you little, I love you lots!

Lyndsee misses her daddy. She learned a song at school today and wanted to sing it just for him. We love you Scott!

Blogging

Wow, is this all there is to it? I can't believe I'm blogging. Does anyone really care about what I have to say?
